Three Muses Encounter, New Orleans
So now that we are back in Melbourne, we try to post memorable bits from the trip, just so that we won’t forget it.
This one happened in Three Muses, a great cocktail/tapas bar on Frenchmen Street, New Orleans. It was our last day in NOLA, we were exhausted and decided to chill at the bar, listening to live music.
The guy to our left, out of the blue, started talking to us, and before too long he’s revealed that he is a fan of the Asian female, and about to marry one from the Philippines in three weeks.
I couldn’t believe my luck. Thanks to Seeking Asian Female documentary I saw at SXSW, I now had the tools to really dig into the story behind this chap, pushing away the knee-jerk revulsion that usually comes in situations like this.
When asked why Asian female, his first answer was “Because they’re gorgeous!” and sought to knuckle-bump Mungo.
But then he then turned quite serious, and cited similar answers to those given by Steven Bolstad (the protagonist of the documentary). He believed they can give him happiness, because they’re nurturing and gentle.
His first marriage also fell apart (wife was an addict and left him eight years ago). One of his close friends married a lady from the Philippines and he asked her to introduce him to one of her friends from back home. And the rest is history. He said he would make sure she has friends (there is a sizeable Filipino community in New Orleans), and he would encourage her to find work that’s fulfilling, and so on.
I told him about the documentary, and how if there’s anything I can glean from watching it, it’s that he needs to be prepared to be patient. Cultural differences are bound to arise. Before we left, I wished him all the best.
This is how SAF doco has changed my attitude. Before, I would just dismiss him as ‘one of those men’. Now, I sincerely wish he would find the happiness and peace he longed for, in this new marriage.
